FAQ's

How long does The Hug stay warm for when used as a heat pack?

The Hug delivers a deep, even warmth. The Classic typically maintains a good heat for around 30–45 minutes, the Mini slightly less - depending on how it’s heated and the room temperature. Many people find The Hug stays gently warm even longer when worn against the body or snuggled in bed.

How long does The Hug stay cold for when it's used as an ice pack?

Honestly? Ages.

When fully frozen, The Hug Classic stays properly cold for well over an hour - sometimes longer - but it depends on room temperature and where you wear it. The Mini slightly less.

Because it’s filled with high-quality gel, it holds its temperature far longer than a standard ice pack.

For safety, we recommend using cold therapy for no more than 20 minutes at a time, followed by a short break before reapplying if needed.

Cold enough to do the job. Sensible enough to use safely.

How long does it take to heat if I want to get it really hot?

Classic size: All microwaves are different, however for the longevity of your Hug we suggest starting with 30 seconds on each side. If it needs more, increase in 10-20 second increments only per side, checking the temperature each time.

For the Mini we recommend heating it once for 30 seconds.

A couple of important things to know:

  • The gel continues to heat internally for several minutes after you remove it from the microwave.
  • Different microwaves vary in power, so your perfect timing may take a little experimenting.
  • Always test before applying, especially if you’re going for a higher heat.

The Hug was designed to create deep soothing warmth for comfort — not scorching.

Is The Hug safe to heat in a microwave that doesn't spin?

Absolutely. The Hug can be safely warmed in a microwave that doesn't rotate. We recommend adding a small microwave-safe cup of water, and curving the Hug inwards to encourage even heating.
Just be sure to gently test microwave times, start with 30 seconds each side and increase up to 10/20 seconds each side from there if it needs more heat.

Is it normal for my skin to turn red after using The Hug?

A light warmth or slight redness on the skin can be completely normal when
using heat or cold. This happens as blood flow increases to the area and should fade
shortly after use.

However, The Hug should always feel comfortably warm - never hot or
uncomfortable. If your skin becomes very red, sore, or feels like it’s burning,
the heat may be too high. Allow it to cool before using it again.

Can I take my Hug on the plane?

Because The Hug contains a gel, some customs teams may refuse to allow it in your carry on. Best to pack it in your checked luggage.
If you have a letter form a medical professional, customs are more likely to allow you to hold onto it. But in-flight facilities are not always equipped to allow passengers to heat or chill personal belongings.

Can I put The Hug cover in the microwave?

Yes, The Hug cover can conveniently go in the microwave so there’s no need to take it off - unless you want to wash it.

How does The Hug compare to a traditional wheat bag?

The Hug is unique in that there are two types of heating application, microwave and boiled water, whereas a wheat bag is limited to microwave use only. Additionally, The Hug has a convenient washable cover for easy cleaning and is designed to be hands-free 😄.

Is it safe to use The Hug heat pack during pregnancy?

You will need to check this with your healthcare provider to be sure it is safe for you. However, using The Hug heat pack during pregnancy is generally considered safe for alleviating aches and pains, such as back or pelvic discomfort. It's important to follow these guidelines to ensure safety:

  • Avoid the Abdomen: Do not apply the heat pack directly to your abdomen, as this area is sensitive during pregnancy.
  • Limit Duration: Use the heat pack for no longer than 20 minutes at a time to prevent overheating.
  • Avoid making the Hug too hot: Get it to a nice warm temperature that brings comfort without over-heating the area.
  • Avoid Falling Asleep: Do not use the heat pack while sleeping to prevent prolonged exposure.

Again, always consult with your healthcare provider before using any heat therapy during pregnancy to ensure it aligns with your specific health needs. (See Healthline for more information)
